When pharmaceutical companies source glass vials, one of the first questions is often whether to use tubular glass vials or molded glass vials.
Both are widely used in pharmaceutical packaging, but they are manufactured differently and have different characteristics in dimensions, weight, appearance and application.

1. How Are Tubular Glass Vials Made?

Molded containers are generally heavier and may have thicker glass sections depending on the design.

5. Surface and Appearance
Customers may also notice visual differences between tubular and molded containers.
Tubular vials generally have a more uniform cylindrical appearance because they originate from glass tubing.
Molded containers may show characteristics related to the molding process.
For pharmaceutical purchasing teams, appearance requirements should be clearly defined during supplier qualification.
The inspection standard should distinguish between cosmetic issues that affect product acceptance and normal characteristics associated with the manufacturing process.

6. Capacity and Application
Both tubular and molded glass containers are used in pharmaceutical packaging, but the preferred format often depends on capacity and application.
Tubular vials are commonly considered for smaller-volume injectable products.
Molded vials and bottles may be selected for certain larger-volume applications or when a heavier container design is preferred.
However, there is no universal rule.
A customer should evaluate:
Drug application → Filling volume → Glass type → Container dimensions → Closure system → Filling equipment
before deciding which manufacturing format is appropriate.
7. Glass Material Still Matters
"Tubular" and "molded" describe the manufacturing method, not the complete material specification.
Buyers still need to confirm the actual glass type.
Depending on the pharmaceutical application, the customer may need to review:
- Hydrolytic resistance
- Chemical composition
- Thermal properties
- Relevant pharmacopeial requirements
- Product-specific quality data
For tubular products made from neutral borosilicate glass, technical information about the glass tubing itself may also be part of the supplier qualification package.
The key point is that the customer should evaluate both the glass material and the container manufacturing method.
8. Closure Compatibility
Regardless of whether the vial is tubular or molded, the neck finish must match the intended closure system.
This may include:
Rubber stopper + aluminum cap
or
Rubber stopper + flip-off cap
The vial neck dimensions, stopper size and cap specification need to work together as a system.
For a new supplier, buyers should therefore evaluate the vial with the actual closure components whenever possible.
This is especially important when the customer already has an established stopper or cap supplier.
9. Sample Testing Before Commercial Orders
When switching from molded to tubular vials—or from tubular to molded vials—sample testing is recommended.
The customer should not assume that two containers with the same nominal volume will behave identically on the filling line.
A practical sample evaluation can include:
- Dimensional verification
- Closure compatibility
- Filling-line trial
- Stoppering and capping
- Visual inspection
- Packing evaluation
For commercial projects, the approved sample should be linked to the final technical drawing and product specification.
