Export Packaging for Pharmaceutical Glass: What Should Be Confirmed Before Shipment?

1. Start with the Packing Specification

The first question should not simply be:
“How many pieces are in one carton?”
A useful packing specification normally includes:
  • Quantity per carton
  • Carton dimensions
  • Net weight
  • Gross weight
  • Number of cartons
  • Internal protection
  • Pallet dimensions
  • Cartons per pallet
These figures provide the basic information required for freight calculations.
For example, two suppliers may quote the same quantity of 10 mL vials, but if one packing method requires significantly more cubic volume, the final logistics cost can be different.
This becomes particularly important for lower-value, high-volume pharmaceutical glass products, where transportation can represent a meaningful part of the landed cost.

2. Pallet Height Can Affect the Shipping Method

Pallet dimensions are often discussed, while pallet height receives less attention.
In practice, height can become a critical restriction.
For sea freight, pallet height influences container utilization and stacking arrangements.
For air freight, aircraft and cargo-terminal limitations can be more restrictive. A pallet that is acceptable for sea transportation may need to be repacked or reduced in height before it can be accepted for a particular air shipment.
This can create additional handling, cost and delay if discovered only after production.
When air freight is a possibility, the maximum acceptable pallet height should therefore be checked before final packing.

3. Calculate by Both Weight and Volume

Pharmaceutical glass has an unusual logistics profile: it is both relatively heavy and space-consuming.
This means container planning should consider weight and cubic volume at the same time.
A container may reach its practical volume limit before reaching its maximum payload. In another packing configuration, weight may become the limiting factor first.
For mixed orders, the calculation becomes more important.
Consider an order containing two vial sizes. The larger vial may occupy more volume per piece, while the smaller vial may allow more cartons to fit into the remaining container space.
Instead of simply estimating the number of pieces, the loading plan should be based on:
Carton dimensions × number of cartons + pallet arrangement + total gross weight.
A theoretical calculation is useful, but some allowance should also be made for loading gaps and practical handling.

4. Mixed Products Need a Loading Plan

Many pharmaceutical customers do not purchase only one product size.
A shipment may contain different vial capacities, ampoules, closures or other packaging components.
In this situation, the question is no longer simply “How many cartons fit in a container?”
The loading sequence also matters.
Heavier cartons should be positioned appropriately, fragile products need sufficient protection, and different SKUs should remain identifiable during unloading.
If rubber stoppers, aluminum caps or syringe components are shipped together with glass products, clear carton markings are particularly useful.
A preliminary loading plan can help purchasing teams understand whether the requested quantities are suitable for a 20-foot or 40-foot container before the final order is confirmed.

5. Export Packaging Has to Protect the Product

Maximizing container utilization should never be the only objective.
Pharmaceutical glass must arrive in a condition suitable for customer inspection and subsequent production.
During international transportation, products may experience:
  • Repeated handling
  • Vibration
  • Container movement
  • Stacking pressure
  • Temperature changes
  • Long storage periods
Internal dividers, trays, shrink wrapping, pallet stabilization and suitable outer cartons can therefore be as important as the container-loading calculation itself.
The appropriate method depends on the product.
Ampoules, conventional vials, cartridges and prefilled syringe barrels do not necessarily require identical protection.
For precision pharmaceutical containers, reducing glass-to-glass contact and uncontrolled movement during transportation is particularly important.

6. Courier, Air or Sea Freight?

The shipment size and project stage usually determine the most practical transportation method.
Courier is often suitable for samples and small qualification quantities.
Air freight may be considered for urgent trial orders or when production schedules do not allow normal sea transit.
Sea freight is generally more practical for larger commercial quantities.
However, the lowest freight quotation should not be considered independently from packing.
Repacking an unsuitable pallet, additional terminal handling or excessive unused container space can change the actual logistics cost.
For regular supply projects, it is useful to establish a standard export packing specification after the first successful shipment.

7. Clarify Who Controls the Freight

Another practical question is whether the buyer or supplier will arrange transportation.
If the customer has an established freight forwarder, using that forwarder can simplify destination-country customs procedures and local delivery.
If the supplier arranges transportation, the quotation should clearly state the applicable Incoterm and what logistics charges are included.
For example, FOB, CFR and CIF quotations represent different responsibilities and cost structures.
Providing the destination port, shipment quantity and preferred Incoterm at the inquiry stage makes freight estimates considerably more meaningful.

Packaging Data Should Be Part of the Purchase Decision

When evaluating pharmaceutical glass suppliers, technical quality naturally comes first. But once the product is approved, logistics becomes part of supply reliability.
Before confirming a commercial order, purchasing teams can request a simple set of data:
Pieces per carton → Carton size → Gross weight → Number of cartons → Pallet size → Pallet height → Total CBM → Total gross weight
With these figures, both sides can evaluate transportation options before the goods are ready.
For international pharmaceutical packaging projects, good export planning is not simply about fitting more cartons into a container. It is about finding a practical balance between product protection, loading efficiency, transportation cost and reliable delivery.
