1. Start with the Exact Product Type
The first step is to identify the container correctly.
“Pharmaceutical bottle” is often too broad. A supplier needs to know whether the requirement is for:

Prefilled syringe barrels

Pharmaceutical glass tubing
Even within the vial category, tubular and molded products may use different manufacturing processes and have different dimensional characteristics.
For an existing commercial product, sending the current drawing or a physical sample is usually more useful than providing the capacity alone.
2. Confirm the Glass Material
Glass material should be clearly stated in the inquiry.
For injectable pharmaceutical applications, neutral borosilicate glass is commonly evaluated because of its chemical and hydrolytic performance.
When sourcing glass tubing or containers made from tubing, technical teams may also review information such as chemical composition, hydrolytic resistance and coefficient of thermal expansion.
The required material should be confirmed according to the pharmaceutical application and applicable regulatory or internal quality requirements.
A quotation based on one glass type should not automatically be compared with a quotation based on another.
3. Capacity Does Not Define the Dimensions
One of the most common misunderstandings in pharmaceutical packaging procurement is assuming that containers with the same nominal volume have identical dimensions.
They often do not.
For a vial, relevant dimensions may include:
Total height, body diameter, neck diameter, mouth dimensions and wall thickness.
For an ampoule, additional details such as stem design, constriction area and breaking configuration may need to be specified.
Cartridges and prefilled syringe barrels require even closer dimensional control because they operate together with rubber components and filling systems.
When possible, the buyer should provide an approved drawing showing critical dimensions and tolerances.
4. The Neck and Closure System Must Match
The container cannot always be evaluated separately from its closure.
For a pharmaceutical vial, the neck finish must be compatible with the intended rubber stopper and aluminum or flip-off cap.
For cartridges, both ends of the container interact with closure components.
For prefilled syringe systems, barrel dimensions must correspond with the plunger stopper, plunger rod and tip or needle configuration.
This means a supplier may need more than the glass specification.
If the customer already uses approved closure components, sharing their drawings or specifications can help identify compatibility issues before samples are produced.
5. Clarify the Intended Filling Process
The same glass container may be used differently depending on the customer's production process.
Useful information includes:

Filling-line type
-
Required processing before filling
-
Sterilization requirements
-
RTU or RTS requirement
-
Component assembly method
-
Relevant equipment limitations
This becomes especially important when the project involves RTU packaging, cartridges or prefilled syringe systems.
A dimension that appears acceptable on a standalone drawing may still create problems on automated equipment.
For new projects, technical confirmation should therefore happen before commercial quantities are ordered.
6. Provide Quantity at the Beginning
Quantity is not only a commercial question.
It can influence production planning, packing configuration and transportation.
When requesting a quotation, it is useful to provide:
Sample quantity → Initial commercial quantity → Estimated annual demand
The supplier can then distinguish between a development project, a trial order and regular commercial supply.
For export projects, quantity also helps determine whether the shipment is more suitable for courier, air freight, LCL sea freight or a full container.
7. Do Not Leave Packing Until the End
Packaging requirements should be discussed during specification confirmation rather than immediately before shipment.
For pharmaceutical glass, buyers may need to know:

Net and gross weight

Internal protection
-
Pallet dimensions
-
Pallet height

Shipping marks
These details are particularly important when calculating container loading or international freight.
For RTU/RTS products, the packaging configuration can also form part of the technical system rather than simply being transport protection.
8. What Should a Complete Inquiry Look Like?
A practical pharmaceutical glass inquiry can be surprisingly short if the right information is included.
For example:
Product: Tubular pharmaceutical vial
Capacity: 10 mL
Glass: Neutral borosilicate
Drawing: Attached
Closure: Rubber stopper + flip-off cap
Quantity: 200,000 pcs initial order
Annual demand: Approximately 1 million pcs
Packing: Export pallet required
Trade term: FOB
Destination: Customer's destination port
For an ampoule, cartridge or prefilled syringe project, the corresponding drawing and component requirements can be added.
This format gives purchasing, technical and supplier teams a common starting point.
Better Specifications Reduce Repeated Communication
The purpose of providing detailed specifications is not to make the purchasing process more complicated.
It does the opposite.
When the product type, material, drawing, closure system, quantity and packing requirements are clear from the beginning, suppliers can provide more accurate technical feedback and quotations.
It also reduces the risk of discovering after sample production that two parties were discussing different versions of a “10 mL vial.”
For pharmaceutical glass packaging projects, a useful rule is:
Do not define the product only by its capacity. Define the complete application.
